History of Porcine Circoviruses1

  • PCV1 was first discovered in Germany in 1974 as a contaminant to a cell line in a laboratory

  • First identified as a clinical disease in Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1991 and reported by Ted Clark, DVM, MVetSc, DACVP, and John Harding, DVM, MSc, of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996

  • First isolated from Canadian pigs in 1998 by John Ellis, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVM

  • Differentiated into non-pathogenic PCV1 (non-disease-causing) and pathogenic PCV2 types and reported by Gordon Allan, PhD, in 1999

  • Clinical disease was reported in France and Spain starting in 1996

  • Since the mid-1990s, the disease has been reported in almost all pig-producing countries around the world
